A New Trigger Device for Channel Spark Systems Based

on a Penning Discharge

Abstract

The ablation efficiency of a channel spark system is mainly influenced by its trigger plasma source. Compared to the application of a sliding discharge trigger plasma source a channel spark system triggered by a Penning discharge exhibits high rates of ablated bulk material per shot, a high reproducibility of the ablated mass per shot and an increased lifetime.
