One technique for the preparation of YBCO coated conductors is the so-called RABiTS technique (rolling assisted biaxially textured substrates), in which biaxially textured Ni and/or Ni-alloy substrates are epitaxially coated with buffer layers and YBCO. In Ni-alloys (Ni-Cr) the oxidation of the substrate during the coating with buffer layers is a severe problem. Therefore, these substrates are often coated with Ni. We used a technique for Ni coating that has not been used in the RABiTS process so far and is superior to other techniques such as PVD and CVD regarding to an easy industrial production. Electrodeposition of Ni on biaxially textured Ni-alloy substrates (BiTEC, biaxially textured electrodeposited coatings) is shown to lead to an outstanding transfer of the texture of the substrate to the layer with an even slightly sharpened texture. In Ni-W substrate tapes a very sharp cube recrystallization texture with FWHM (111) of < 5° was reached, which lead to current densities of 1.3 MA/cm2. Financially supported by bmb+f, FKZ 13N7268.
