The capabilities of spherical loads in the characterization of the power distribution in powerful Gaussian Beams is described, and examples are given. The achievement of good matching to real beams is shown, and the basic design features are discussed. The load structure is adjusted to the specific application (peak power and pulse length) by tayloring the appropriate heat removal scheme, but the electromagnetic design of the absorber is the same in all applications. This approach allows, in particular, the use of the same loading during all the development phases of an high power source of mm-waves.
